Breaking Limits: Daniel Chan’s Fight Beyond Physical Barriers

In 1944, British neurologist Ludwig Guttmann started to rehabilitate the war-wounded through sports to restore their self-confidence, and in 1948, Guttmann organized the Stoke Mandeville Games, the first competition for wheelchair-bound athletes, which became an international event, now known as the Paralympics. In 1948, Guttmann organized the "Stoke Mandeville Games", the first wheelchair athletes' competition, which became an international event, now known as the Paralympics. The first Paralympics were held in Rome in 1960, and since then, the Paralympics have been held every four years, just like the Olympic Games.

Paralympics combines the words "Paraplegic" and "Olympics". "Para" means "on the side of" in Greek, symbolizing the parallelism with "Olympics", as there is no hierarchy between the two events, which are both fair and equal sporting events. In Asia, Paralympics is translated as "Paralympic Games" in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, and Singapore, and "Paralympic Games" in Taiwan. Regardless of the translation, Paralympics, like the Olympic Games, is the highest hall of fame for these athletes. As Daniel Chan of the Hong Kong team said, they will pursue the spirit of "Higher, Stronger, Farther" here.

With the conclusion of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the public began to notice the outstanding performances of disabled athletes in various sports, especially in the new sport of badminton this year. The most popular athlete from the Hong Kong team, Daniel Chen, won a bronze medal after a series of fierce competitions.

"Don’t Let Physical Challenges Limit Your Potential ."

Daniel Chan Ho Yuen, 36, is the first and only wheelchair badminton player in Hong Kong. Ranked No. 2 in the world in Men's Singles Wheelchair Badminton (2017-2021), he has participated in major and minor world tournaments, winning silver medals at the 2019 World Championships and the 2018 Asian Para Games. In this year's Tokyo Paralympic Games, he broke through his rivals to win the bronze medal for Hong Kong, which was the best reward for many Hong Kong people who woke up at 8:00 am to watch him play.

More importantly, he has successfully utilized this opportunity to let more people know about wheelchair badminton and the disabled athletes. In addition, Daniel has decided to go back to school to study Physical Education and Sport at the Hong Kong Baptist University. He hopes to fight for the rights of disabled athletes and help more disabled people to hold their heads up high and regain their confidence through his own experience and refinement of his knowledge in the field of sports.

"Hope is the only light that breaks through the darkness."

When Daniel was 23 years old, he was in a serious traffic accident on his way back to Hong Kong. To save his life, the ambulance crew amputated his left leg on the spot. Upon waking up and realizing that his left leg was missing, Daniel had an emotional breakdown and was afraid that he would not be able to integrate into society. After 10 months of treatment and surgeries in the hospital, and with his family and girlfriend (now his wife) encouraging him to hold on to hope, Chen finally overcame his fears and embarked on the path of wheelchair badminton.

Daniel was a badminton fanatic before his injury, and with the encouragement of his friends, he picked up his racket and gradually found his worth. Although the game was unfamiliar to him at the beginning, and because he was sitting in a wheelchair, the range of play became smaller and more difficult, challenging his concentration and reflexes. However, for Daniel, wheelchair badminton is the best gift from God. Since becoming a Paralympian, Chan has been training at least 30 hours a week, which is comparable to the training hours of an average Olympic athlete. The training program includes strength, cardio endurance, and ball skills. To move more flexibly on the wheelchair, his hands rubbed against the rubber tires for a long period of time, and his knuckles became skinned, blistered, and calloused, which are all marks of his hard training.

"Family is the strongest support!"

On his journey to the Paralympic Games, Daniel is most grateful to his mom, who gave him life again, and his wife, who supported him to realize his dream. If it wasn't for his mom's insistence on sending him back to Hong Kong for treatment and his wife's strong support for him to become an athlete after his injury in an accident more than a decade ago, without their companionship to tide him over the downturn and give him positive energy to keep him motivated to move forward, there wouldn't have been a Daniel Chan, who is now glowing on the sports field.

Last but not least, Mr. Chan would like to thank his friends who supported him during the Paralympic Games, and he hopes that they will continue to pay attention to the disabled athletes after the competition. For them, the messages of encouragement, support, and recognition are the best encouragement to promote the achievements of disabled athletes.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have revived the global sports fever, and the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics have once again made people admire the perseverance of the life fighters and the spirit of the athletes. We hope that all athletes in the 2024 Paris Olympics and 2024 Paris Paralympics can bring the nutrients accumulated during this period of time to bloom into colorful performances again. At the same time, I wish Daniel would win his gold medal in 2024.
