Tennis and rounders are hard to distinguish, are they the same sport? Why are they so popular these days? "Round Tennis" is an exciting and fun sport. In this article, Unistar will take you from the origin of the game to the rules and regulations, so that we can understand the charm of Round Tennis together, if you are interested, please read on!

What is Round Tennis? Emerging sport, simple and easy to learn

Roundnet, sometimes called Spikeball, was invented by Americans in 1989 and later promoted by the Spikeball brand as a national sport.

The rules of the game are simple and easy to understand: Place a small 12-inch stretchy net in the center and divide four players into two teams (2 vs. 2) who take turns hitting the ball against the net with their hands and letting the ball rebound back to them. The opposing team has to return the ball to the net within three touches or the opposing team will be counted as the scorer.

This sport does not require a large venue and can be played even in open spaces and parks, which is very suitable for all kinds of people to participate.

Round Tennis Rules

Round Tennis is played by two teams, usually two players per team. The core rule of the game is that the ball must bounce after touching the round net and be caught by the opponent to continue the offense and defense. The serve must be made from outside the edge of the net and the ball must be hit towards the net so that it bounces back to a position where it can be caught by the opponent. Each team may touch the ball a maximum of three times during the match (similar to the three-beat rule in volleyball), and the ball may not be hit consecutively by the same player. Most matches are played on an 11- or 21-point scale, with at least a two-point lead required to win the match.

Common fouls include: the ball missing the net, the ball touching the ground during a stroke, or the ball causing an irregular bounce.

Round Tennis

In terms of gameplay, the fun of Round Tennis lies in the flexibility of movement and the use of strategy. Both teams take turns to serve the ball at the beginning of the game. The ball can be served with either a forehand or a backhand, but it needs to be served with both power and angle to prevent the opponent from catching the ball easily. After catching the ball, teams can hit the ball with the palm of the hand, the back of the hand or the fingers, but cannot grasp or hold the ball.

The attacker tries to make mistakes with fast, low angle or spin shots, while the defender catches and counters the ball with anticipation and short bursts of power. Round Tennis can be played in parks, open spaces, or yards on the same sizes as the official games, but the casual game can be more flexible by mixing up the number of players and adjusting the scoring rules to make it easier for novices to participate.

The overall pace of the game is fast, and your reaction to the ball and speed of movement are the key to victory. Compared to volleyball where you can only run in a fixed direction, rounders allows you to chase the ball in 360 degrees, making the transition quicker and more exciting!

How does a round tennis match work?

There are already organized competitions for this emerging sport, with Hong Kong setting up the Round Tennis Association as early as 2017 to start planning coaching and referee training, as well as a number of international competitions and community events.

Official round tennis tournaments are organized by the Spikeball Roundnet Association or local sports organizations and are single-elimination, double-elimination, or round-robin tournaments. The fast-paced nature of the game requires players to have good coordination, explosive power, and the ability to communicate in real time. In top-level matches, the spin and landing of the ball are often the key to victory, and the transition between offense and defense can be completed in almost a second, making the game highly entertaining to watch.

In addition to international tournaments, many schools and communities also organize their own friendly tournaments in a more relaxed format, encouraging players to try different playing styles and promoting the popularity of the sport.
