The Origin of Dragon Boat: More Than a Traditional Dragon Boat Festival Activity

When most people think of dragon boat, the first thing that comes to mind is the Dragon Boat Festival and dragon boat racing. In fact, dragon boats originated in ancient China thousands of years ago. The most commonly cited story of its origin is that it commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the river to die for his country, and the people of the area rowed after him to save him, beating drums to drive away the fish and shrimp, which eventually evolved into a form of dragon boat racing.

But dragon boating is more than just a festive custom; it has evolved over time to become a popular water team sport in Asia and around the world, and is an extreme challenge that combines physical fitness, rhythm and teamwork.

In this article, Unistar will take you through the rules and techniques of dragon boating and how professional dragon boaters are trained. If you are interested, please read on!

What is Dragon Boat? A water sport that combines culture, sports and teamwork.

A dragon boat is a long speed boat, usually consisting of 10 to 20 paddlers, plus a drummer and coxswain, each of whom plays an integral role. The goal of a dragon boat race is to reach the finish line as fast as possible within a specific distance, testing not only individual explosive power, but also team rhythm and overall coordination.

The characteristics of dragon boat are rhythm and synchronization. Each paddle must be in line with the drums, with the same force and the same angle, in order to maximize the power of the boat. This not only requires long hours of training, but also demonstrates strong discipline and teamwork.

How many people does it take to row a dragon boat? Role Assignment and Common Establishment

Depending on the size of the race and the type of boat, there may be some variations in the number of people in a dragon boat. The following are common standard configurations:

  • Standard Dragon Boat: 20 paddlers + 1 drummer + 1 coxswain, total 22 persons
  • Small Dragon Boat: 10 paddlers + 1 drummer + 1 coxswain, total 12 persons

Each member has a clear role to play:

  • Oarsman: responsible for rowing, divided into port and starboard, need to maintain symmetry
  • Drummer: masters the rhythm, is the team's metronome
  • Steersman: Steers the boat in the right direction, determines the stability and straight forward progress of the dragon boat.

Dragon boating is not a matter of strength alone, but a matter of rhythm, skill and tacit understanding in order to stand out in the competition.

How to practice Dragon Boat? Training Highlights and Suggestions for Getting Started

If you want to participate in dragon boat sports, the following training points should not be overlooked:

1. Physical Fitness Foundation

Dragon boat paddlers need to have strong cardio endurance and core strength, so they need to do a mix of aerobic and weight training, such as running, rowing machine, weight training, and so on.

2. Paddling technique

Technique is more important than power. Every detail, from the way you hold the oar, to the angle at which you enter the water, to the timing of your exit, affects your overall propulsion. Usually, the training is done on land and then on the water.

3. Rhythmic coordination

All paddlers need to paddle in unison to the rhythm of the drummer in order to maximize their performance. Rhythmic practice is also one of the most common training exercises for dragon boat teams.

4. Teamwork and Psychological Development

In water racing, the slightest discord can cause the dragon boat to lose balance or slow down, so trusting and understanding each other is a challenge that cannot be matched by any solo sport!

Introduction to Dragon Boat Rules: Basic Knowledge and Race Procedure

Dragon boat races are usually held on straight waterways with distances ranging from 200 meters, 500 meters to 1,000 meters. The following are the common rules and regulations for a typical race:

  • Start: The drummer will beat the drum and wait for the referee's signal to start rowing.
  • Route restriction: Each dragon boat must stay within the designated waterway and must not yaw or interfere with other teams.
  • Finish: The first boat to cross the finish line.
  • REFEREE OBSERVATION: The referee monitors for fouls such as early paddling, collisions, waterway deviations, etc., from an aerial shot or on-water position.

The Charm of Dragon Boat Sports: Not Just Rowing, but Showing Culture and Team Spirit

In recent years, dragon boat has transformed from a traditional custom into an international sport, with the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) and professional competitions in various countries, and cross-country competitions often held in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States.

Unisatr has assisted a number of community and corporate dragon boat teams in designing their own commemorative shirts and race jerseys, which not only allow the teams to be instantly recognized during the races, but also unite the overall sense of honor and belonging.
