In this team, every member is like a young, hidden prodigy, full of potential and waiting to shine.
Hailing from Xinming Elementary School, this handball team’s journey is a tale of a mentor discovering a group of gifted young athletes — a miracle where talent meets opportunity. They may not be the heroes that dominate headlines, but their perseverance, dedication, and determination spark curiosity and hope in our hearts. Let us uncover the remarkable story these children are writing. When honed resilience meets the brilliance of talent, what kind of miracle will unfold? Prepare to be amazed and inspired by the incredible performances of this exceptional team.
It is a blessing to find one thing in life that you truly love!
Handball is the lifelong passion of Coach Wu Chun-Ye of Xinning Elementary School’s handball team. However, unlike the typical path followed by many athletes, Coach Wu didn’t pursue a career as a professional player after his training. Instead, he chose to enter the field of education, aiming to help young students who love handball find direction in their academic journey, while also dedicating himself to promoting the sport.

The Xinning Elementary School handball team has achieved impressive results on the court,2023most notably,7they won the U12 championship at the 2023 Brno International Youth Handball Festivalin 2023.Curious about how Coach Wu guides the children, we asked him about his approach.
Given the school’s reputation as a stronghold in sports, we initially expected answers centered around discipline, willpower, and self-demand. Surprisingly, Coach Wu’s philosophy goes in the opposite direction.
Coach Wu emphasized
“I don’t expect children to blindly stick to their choices. Instead, I design fun and engaging training methods, use various equipment, and regularly switch things up. This flexible training approach helps children genuinely enjoy the sport. By cleverly integrating the school’s top-tier resources, we’re able to maximize the overall training effectiveness.”
It’s Not About Teaching Handball But Helping Kids Fall in Love with It
In addition to helping the children improve their skills, Coach Wu emphasized during the interview his "Five Core Principles" in educating young athletes: character, attitude, manners, academics, and lastly, ball skills.
“Why is ball skill the last priority?”At Xinning Elementary School, the values Coach Wu instilled through these five principles turned the handball team into a highly supported extracurricular group among parents. More than that, the team replaced monotonous classroom learning with hands-on activities that fostered deeper educational outcomes.
Such a positive cycle, supported by parents, teachers, and the school, has helped nurture a group of young warriors ready to bring honor to Taiwan. It has also laid a solid foundation for the future of Taiwan’s athletic talent.
Sports training isn’t just about mastering techniques. As Coach Wu’s handball team has shown, it’s also a powerful tool for developing well-rounded individuals. The true value of sports lies not only in the refinement of skills but in the journey of personal growth that it inspires.
"How can we help pave the way for kids who love handball?"

But Coach Wu’s mission doesn’t end there. His long-term vision is to revitalize the entire handball development system in Taiwan and train more outstanding players.
Currently, Taiwan’s handball training infrastructure remains underdeveloped. In the Taoyuan region, handball programs are offered only at the elementary and junior high levels, while senior high schools and universities lack proper resources and training opportunities.
To address this, Coach Wu has set a five-year goal: to establish at least one handball team at the elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels in Taoyuan, forming clubs. He also aims to collaborate with the National Taiwan Sport University in Linkou to launch an official university team
Through these efforts, young athletes will have the chance to become handball scholarship students and secure admissions into higher education institutions, thus building a stronger pipeline for Taiwan’s future in the sport.
Parents with big dreams for their children want to see a clear future, and these young “Lights of Taiwan” deserve a bigger stage.
Coach Wu Chun-Ye, who is committed to transforming the grassroots foundation of handball in Taiwan, continues to use his strength to build larger and more diverse platforms for his students.
Maybe it is difficult to create a stage alone, maybe it takes a lot of time to change everything, but we can still see the determination and hope in the eyes of the coaches and the children, maybe the most important thing for them is not the success of the result, but the commitment they have made for their passion, and to be able to pay for the sport they are passionate about forever is the happiest thing that Coach Wu Junye can do for the children. I believe that this is the happiest thing that Coach Wu can do for the children.
