Cherish Every Moment on the Court and Give It Your All｜Hualien High School Basketball Team

"Even if you play three minutes, you have to cherish the opportunity to perform."

During the regular season, Hualien High School head coach Huang Keh-Wen reminded the players that smooth transitions, teamwork, and using teamwork to play smart are the hallmarks of this team.

Hualien High School, located next to Hualien Harbor and looking out over the Pacific Ocean, is not only one of the top schools for higher education, but also has a very strong athletic culture within the school. The Hualien High School basketball team won the championship in the B division of the High School Basketball League in both the 98th and 100th school years. Looking back, the team was initially formed by the general student body as a club, and for a short period of time it was dominated by the P.E. class, until three years ago, when the school's policy was changed, and the team was reorganized again, with players returning to the general student body, who are passionate about basketball.

Spellbinding. It's a first impression.

Hualien High School's coaching staff, led by alumni Mr. Huang Ke-Wen and Mr. Kuo Wen-Jie, upholds the idea that enjoyment of playing golf not only improves physical fitness, but also cultivates the players' focus on their studies. Mr. Kuo said, "The most basic thing is that you can get mental relief, and when you're out on the court, not only can you improve your resistance to stress, but you can also enjoy the joy of success, which is something that I think you can only feel on the court.

Recalling the first time she saw the students, Mr. Kwok's first impression of them was one of "hard work", "When I first saw the Flower Middle School team, they weren't very tall, but each one of them was very hard working, and they were willing to use their speed and brains to make up for their disadvantages, and when I saw their hard work, I became more and more confident in them."

Take responsibility for your choices

The coaching staff has a way of balancing schoolwork and training to put parents' minds at ease. They cultivate the players' ability to coordinate and solve problems, and let the players understand the teachers' expectations of them and work hard to achieve them, in exchange for the teachers' trust and recognition of them.

"I have to keep up with my studies, it's my choice, I have to take responsibility for what I'm doing."

In his senior year of high school, Xu Kecheng chose to sacrifice his playtime for his studies and basketball, but he was happy to do so, "I didn't think about giving up because I really like this sport.

Also in his senior year of high school was Lu Hongwei, who had wanted to be a Division I player. Lu has been playing basketball with his brother and father since he was five years old, and has been inseparable from basketball since he was a child. However, considering his strength and the length of his training time, he decided to attend Hualien High School, where both academics and training go hand in hand, "The hardest part is that sometimes after class, you have to practice right away, and then you have to go to a tutorial class or a classroom, which is a very tight schedule, but that's what makes it so fun to play both roles. I can find fun in the middle of it, and have a channel to relieve my stress in the midst of my busy schedule."

Lu Hongwei and Xu Kecheng, who have been teammates since junior high school and now serve as captain and vice-captain of the team respectively, not only have an excellent understanding on the court, but also share the same goal for the future - to become a defenseman. "If they can't help the team on the court, they can at least help their teammates off the court. A few years ago, I found out that in the NBA and SBL, they are all very easy to reach their peak, but it's easy for them to stop when a big illness or injury occurs. They realize that even if they are not players in the future, they can still help the athletes on the court through what they have learned.

Teamwork to create cohesion

The team spirit of Hualien High School is deeply rooted in the hearts of the players, as the team only has one hour of practice time in the morning and one hour in the afternoon, which is very precious. Mr. Kuo believes that the players reflect these feelings in their mentality because they cherish them, "They have a very strong heart for basketball, so when it comes to the game, they are not too likely to give up, they will stick to the end, and try to fight to the very end."

Of the 26 members of the team, Lu Hongwei and Xu Kecheng have taken on the responsibility of leading the team with the trust of their coach. They set a good example by exercising their peer influence and leading their juniors, "The main thing is for us to do well first, to be a role model for them, or to gather the strength of some people and see if we can infect the other team members.

How a team can effectively utilize each other's strengths in a short period of time relies on teamwork, and this is the most valuable lesson basketball has taught Hsu, "We have little time to train, we don't have time to strengthen our physical fitness with others, so we can only connect each other's ideas, and with teamwork, we can fight with other teams that are very physical."

This team is a team oriented team that cherishes its time with basketball and will do its best to win every time.
