Soccer is not only one of the most watched and played sports in the world, but it is also an art of the game that combines tactics and improvisation. Whether you are participating in varsity training or preparing to customize a jersey for a group, a certain level of understanding of the rules and regulations of soccer is a fundamental skill. Not only is it important to understand the game, but it is also important to be able to make accurate judgments when you are actually on the field.

In this article, UNISTAR will explain the basic rules of soccer, soccer game time and substitution rules, types of soccer fouls, soccer offside rules and other four major aspects to help you understand the sport of soccer, if you are interested in continue to read it!

Basic Rules of Soccer

In an official game, soccer is played between two teams of up to 11 players each, including a goalkeeper. The object of the game is to get the ball into the opposing team's goal, and each goal scored is a point.

Play begins with a kickoff from the center circle and is restarted whenever a goal is scored, at the end of the first half, or at the restart of the game. There are clear touchlines and goal lines: if the ball crosses the touchline completely, it is an out-of-bounds ball and the opposing team restarts the game; if it crosses the goal line, it is a corner kick or goal kick, depending on whether the attacking or defending team decides to take the ball.

Although these rules may seem simple, there are many details to enforcing them. For example, when a player crosses the touchline to serve a lineout, both feet must be on the ground and must not cross the line of scrimmage, or the ball will be awarded back to the opposing team.

Soccer Match Time and Substitution Rules

A standard soccer game consists of two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute halftime break. In the event of a knockout system or a tie-breaker, a 30-minute extension may be added (divided into two 15-minute halves), and if there is no winner, the game will go to PKs.

Substitutions can be made in each match according to regulations, and FIFA will allow up to five substitutions in a match from 2022 onwards, but only within three substitutions (excluding at halftime). Such adjustments will help to improve player safety and maintain the pace of the game, and will make bench depth an important consideration in the tactical arrangements.

In grassroots leagues or friendly matches, substitution rules may also be set by the club, such as the "unlimited substitution system" which is common in school or amateur leagues and is suitable for allowing more players to participate in the game.

What are the types of soccer fouls?

Although the physical confrontation in soccer is intense, the referee will determine whether or not a foul has been committed based on the intensity and purpose of the action. Common types of soccer fouls include:

  • Pulling or Pushing: Obstructing the movement of an opponent, especially in the penalty area, will result in a penalty kick being awarded.
  • Shoveling: It is a foul if a player touches the ball before the ball is shoved.
  • Handball Foul: A non-goalkeeper touching the ball with his/her hand in a non-permitted area is considered a foul and affects the game.
  • Risky play: e.g. lifting the foot too high, deliberately blocking the goalkeeper's kick, etc.

In addition, "tactical fouls" often occur in modern soccer, such as pulling a man in order to stop a quick counter-attack, which is often not violent but has a tactical intent, and will be recognized by the referee and given a yellow card warning.

Soccer's Offside Rule: The Simple but Often Misunderstood Offensive Red Line

The offside rule is one of the most difficult rules for beginners to understand. Simply put, when an attacking player is in the opponent's half of the field and stands closer to the goal than the second-to-last defending player, and a teammate passes the ball to him, it will be blamed for offside.

The offside key is:

  1. Whether a player is standing over the last defending "player" (excluding the goalkeeper).
  2. Position at the moment of the pass, not at the moment of the catch.
  3. If a player is returning to defense or not participating in the attack, the player is not considered offside.
