Life Is Like a Ping Pong Game — Stay Focused and Move Forward Like an Athlete: Interview with Chiang Hung-Chieh
Mild and firm may be innate, or it may be a kind choice after training; Chiang Hung-Chieh always gives people this feeling, no matter on which occasions you see him, and in which capacity you meet him, he always retains a kind of Chiang Hung-Chieh unique characteristics.
"It's not about training Olympic athletes, it's just about my own love of pool, and trying to get people to enjoy it is the most important thing I want to do!
Despite his many attempts in front of the screen, Chiang has never forgotten his origins as a ping pong player. He shared that when he was young, he didn't like to study and went to play pool without a lunch break, and was told by the coach that he was very talented, which gave him a great sense of achievement at that time, so he left his home in Hsinchu in junior high school and went to Tainan to study at Zhongxiao Junior High School, where there was a pool team, and he even competed in the international tournaments.
In a school team surrounded by excellent people, it is inevitable to feel the pressure, but fortunately, Chiang can turn the pressure into nutrients, recall, or have fun!
"I realized that I don't have to be the first one, and the group life with my teammates has helped me socialize a little bit earlier."
At the age of 21, Chiang Hung-Chieh was laid up in bed for seven to eight months due to a hip surgery, enduring a difficult recovery period and psychological reconstruction. His physical and mental condition at that time made people realize at a glance that he was very different from what he used to be. However, the more he tried to recover, the more he failed to find the direction, which was a gray period for Jiang Hongjie at that time. Later, Chiang Hung-Chieh reflected and realized:
"It's because I didn't put my heart and soul into it, I didn't think about the movements and which ones were right for me!"
To make oneself stronger, it is not about practicing hard and being immersed in negative emotions, but rather, it is about withdrawing in time to see one's blind spots. After facing himself honestly and finding the most suitable way, Chiang not only gradually got out of the period of hitting the wall, even the original six hours of practice time was shortened to three hours to get the feeling back, Jiang Hongjie recalled the original intention at that time, "Maybe it is the goal to participate in the Olympic Games!
Having gone through the process of self-healing, he was asked how much he had grown as an athlete.
"Athletes trained at a young age are like early entrants to a small society, where they can cultivate discipline, discipline, mutual assistance, tolerance, etc., and their stress resistance is also higher." Chiang thinks so.
Despite his athletic background, Chiang has always been more resistant to stress than the average person and has been used to competing in public since he was a child, which is more stressful than performing in front of a crowd. He laughs, "Athletes prepare for battle, study others, and examine themselves before they have a chance to go on stage, but performing arts work makes me more nervous because I don't know what's going to happen next!
Despite his nervousness, Chiang's athletic qualities still came into play at the right time, and he joked, "Maybe he has a thicker skin! I don't think it's a big deal to be scrutinized for not performing well, so I'll just accept it and improve, but if I keep thinking about not performing well, it'll be even worse, just like you can't focus too much on the details of the game and think back again and again about which shot you just got lucky with or how you should have behaved.
Since he was a kid, he has been playing billiards, which has brought him moments of glory and made him known as Jiang Hongjie. However, there are gains and regrets. Chiang once shared in a reality program that he was practicing pool when he was young and felt envious of his classmates who were playing games at that time, which was a regret of his childhood.
Nowadays, Chiang often shares photos of his happy life with his children on social media platforms, no matter whether they are going out to activities or playing with them, so it can be seen that Chiang wants to give his children a happy childhood with all his heart. Do you let your kids play Ping Pong, or what do you think of parents who want to let their kids play pool? His answer is very much in line with his character: "It's good for pre-school children to get in touch with billiards, it can help them to develop their fine muscles, and it's good for them to develop a skill, but it doesn't mean that they have to be very good at billiards, or they have to be on the varsity team in the future, it's more important to make them feel that it's fun.
Whether he is the pool player Chiang Hung-chieh, the "Boss" called by the star team members in the sports reality program, or Chiang in various occasions; from his career as an athlete till now, even though he has gone through the lows and chaos, he has seen that he has always retained his stable characteristics as an athlete, strong but not sharp, and traverses with his own rhythm and positive direction.
If life is a Ping Pong game, after all these years of changes and challenges, we can still see that he can always start a new round of his life with a reversal.
