TIYB: Taiwan’s First Youth Basketball League Brings Passion and Vision to the Court

The Taipei International Youth Basketball League (TIYB) is Taiwan’s very first dedicated youth basketball league, aiming to create more platforms for young players to shine and to inject fresh energy into grassroots basketball development in the country.

During the 2021–2022 season, TIYB hosted competitions across age groups from 8U to 15U, with divisions segmented by both age and skill level: 8U, 10U, 12U D1, 12U D2, 14U, and 15U. The season spanned five months of regular games followed by a month-long postseason. Uni-Magazine was on the scene for the thrilling championship matchups.

TIYBEmphasizes Building Players, Not Just Winners

TIYB’s founder, Chris, observed that for years, Taiwan lacked a structured league that allowed young players to consistently play after school and on weekends. Inspired by international systems and player development models from countries like Japan and the U.S., Chris established TIYB with the philosophy of “developing youth over chasing wins.” He emphasized the importance of man-to-man defense over zone defense at the youth level, as practiced in Japan and the U.S. This approach avoids large score gaps and ensures that every player has the chance to grow individually.TIYB also implemented strict age segmentation to prevent imbalances due to physical development differences, giving each player a fair and meaningful opportunity to compete.

Despite pandemic challenges, the league successfully held its 2021–22 Championship Games on May 21 at Taipei’s Heping Basketball Gymnasium, with enthusiastic players and supportive families showing up in full force.

In the 12U D2 final, undefeated Heti Elementary School faced off against the determined FireDragon squad. With intense six-day-a-week training, Heti forced multiple turnovers and fouls, ultimately outpacing FireDragon’s valiant comeback in the second half. Heti clinched the title, and their standout player Chou Sheng-Jie was named FMVP, scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. Remarkably, Chou had only been playing basketball for a year and a half, and modestly said in his postgame interview, “I did okay, just still getting used to the defensive play.”

Coach Lin Yen-Shuo of Heti Elementary praised TIYB’s player-focused format, noting: “With only man-to-man defense allowed, it really emphasizes individual performance. There aren’t many games for elementary players, but through this league, we can play 12 in a season, which really helps players gain experience and prepare for larger school tournaments.”

He also highlighted TIYB’s thoughtful rules—such as requiring leading teams to pull back past the three-point line once up by 20 points—to prevent demoralizing blowouts, especially for newcomers just falling in love with the sport.

"The most impressive thing about participating in TIYB is that I can communicate with more different players and improve my abilities."

In the final match of the day, Xinyi Junior High School took on the Falcons Basketball Club in a fierce 15U showdown. Xinyi’s relentless full-court pressure created a growing lead, but the Falcons refused to fold, fighting back with resilience. The game was so intense that some players were injured—but returned to the court, drawing cheers from the crowd. In the end, Xinyi secured a hard-earned 79–72 victory.

Xinyi’s Lee Yen-Rong was named FMVP with a stellar performance: 26 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 5 steals. “This was the most memorable game of the season,” he shared. “My shooting felt different today—I was hitting my threes.” He also passed on a valuable lesson: “Secure the ball before rushing into your move.” Hsieh Mon-Geng, who made the All-League First Team and won the league MVP, echoed the value of the TIYB experience: “The chance to meet and compete with different players really helped my skills grow.”

Coach Lai Hsin-Hung, who has led teams for nearly two decades, praised the game’s intensity and competitiveness. “The Falcons are technically strong,” he noted. “But our players train six days a week, three hours a day, including mornings. That dedication made the difference in stamina and focus.”

The TIYB team goes beyond organizing a tournament—they are crafting an ecosystem where each young athlete has a stage to grow.

Even as the final whistle blew near 9 PM,the crowd’s energy stayed high. Coach Lai observed: “Parents are more involved than ever—it’s great to see them grow alongside their kids.”For those who couldn’t attend in person, TIYB makes sure no one misses out. Through high-quality social media coverage, video highlights, and player features, the league brings a near-professional experience to youth athletes. “Today’s youth are growing up with digital platforms,” said Chris. “We want to let them see, share, and celebrate their efforts with the world.”

TIYB isn’t slowing down. In the upcoming season, the league plans to expand to include an 18U division, reaching even more students across different age groups. They also aim to bring the league to central and southern Taiwan, inviting more schools and teams to join the movement. Looking ahead, Chris revealed TIYB’s exciting international plans. With sister leagues in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Macau, the goal is to launch a pan-Asian youth basketball league once the pandemic situation improves, offering Taiwanese players a chance to compete and connect on a global scale.TIYB is more than just a basketball league. It’s a vision for the future of Taiwanese basketball. With each season, it continues to lay the foundation for young athletes to dream bigger, work harder, and perhaps, one day, shine on the professional or international stage.
